SHOW-BIGNESS

The large-scale event as an argument for the projective transformation of Colo Colo Monumental Stadium and its Context

The construction of large-scale buildings for performances is in a straight line with the metropolis impulse to achieve greater complexity. Soccer stadiums are one of the most unvarying typologies projected under a tripartite structure composed by the arena, the tiers and its "counterpart" or exterior facade, all three with a regular morphology that has been perpetuated over time.

The Monumental Stadium of Colo-Colo, Santiago, Chile, chosen as subject of inquiry of this thesis, belongs to the most popular soccer team in Chile. The massive scale of the urban event is a negative externality. Therefore, the projective exploration is developed in two scales; the building´s scale and the site´s scale of this "show-bigness" object, focusing on the attendant's experience by optimizing the performance of the stadium to house the event since the arrival, over the soccer match, and departure.

Details

"Show Bigness" is a wordplay derived from "show business", replacing "business" by "bigness" to express the idea of a large scale show or showing greatness; directly related to the focal research topic: the exploration about one of the largest architectural typologies as soccer stadiums are, proposing a projective process where the user-spectator experience within both the interior architectural morphology as in the context, is the argument thread.
